FORUM CONVERSATION:
ABDELLAH KARROUM & PEDRO GÓMEZ-EGAÑA
ON ARTICULATING WORKS AND PLACES
We continue to host presentations related to the exhibitions at Hordaland Art Centre. This time we want to highlight thoughts on art's relation to site in the presentation On articulating Works and Places by Abdellah Karroum, and a dialogue between him and Pedro Gómez-Egaña.
Participants are recomended to arrive a bit before the presentation to have the opportunity to see the last day of Might arrives by Pedro Gómez-Egaña; a performance which looks like an installation.
‘Site specific’ is usually a term applied to works outside of the white cube, although more and more artists directly link their works to the institution that house them. This is the case of the installation Might arrives by Pedro Gómez-Egaña. To shed light on ideas on art work and place Abdellah Karroum has been invited.
Karroum writes about his interests which will be addressed in this presentation: “Site specific or in-situ are the terms we agree to discuss in the field of art criticism or contemporary art history. The terms have different nuances depending on the reading of the art work (afterwards) and depending on if the history of the appearance of the artwork is taken into consideration. What I am interested in when I suggest to work “On articulating works & places” is to experiment together with artists on the possibilities to articulate two parallel strands of contemporary art thinking and production, one being visual, and the other being informative. The question is what makes the artwork active in a different place than the one of its production? How do we (artists and curators) articulate the correspondence between the exhibition context and both the physical and conceptual references of the art works.”
After the presentation we will host a dialogue between Abdellah Karroum and Pedro Gómez-Egaña.
In October 2008, Pedro made two works for L’appartement 22 in Rabat and Fez, Morocco, for the project Le Monde Autour De Vous co-curated by Abdellah Karoum, Albert Heta and Anne Szefer Karlsen.
----------
Abdellah Karroum (1970) works as an independent curator, publisher and art researcher based in Morocco. He initiated the project Le Bout Du Monde, art expeditions undertaken since 2000. He is the founding director of the independent art space L’appartement 22 and the experimental web based radio RADIOapartment22. Most of L’appartement22’s projects are conceived for the space in the context of artists’ residencies that have been continuously developed. Since 2007, L’appartement22 functions collectively and cooperatively, engaging with international curators and artists. Karroum was associate curator for the Dak’Art Biennale 2006, and he curated Expedition 7 (Patries Relatives) for the Position Papers exhibitions program in the 7th Gwangju Bienniale 2008.
