Renata Lucas - Falha (Failure)
Some art works never lose their value and current interest, and their repetitions different places at different times will lead to an accumulation of stories and associations. Falha (Failure) by Renata Lucas is such a work. Different from all her other works, which are place- and time specific, this one can be moved. The Midsummer Night Session

Morten Torgersrud - A neutral, flexible structure
For many years Morten Torgersrud has photographed various landscapes in the Barents region and investigated their meaning; from residential areas, architecture and town plans, to the ideological landscape created by certain ideas of geography in older photographs. In the exhibition A neutral, flexible structure it is the economic and abstract landscapes that are investigated through a series of images from this area.

B-open reading group: Anthea Buys
B-opens first reading group in 2012 is hosted by Anthea Buys, resident at Hordaland Art Centre this January. Buys has chosen two texts and one recipe for the reading: The Man of The Crowd by Edgar Allan Poe, an extract from Three Banquets for a Queen by Charlotte Birnbaum and a recipe for great great Aunt Bessie´s biscuits. In the study circle, Buys wants to look at the rise of incidental amateur professionalisms in contemporary artistic and curatorial practice and the relationship of knowledge in traditionally “non-art” fields to the art-specific practices which this knowledge informs. The texts and the discussion will be in English.

Back to the future – Evaluation of Collaborative Research Residency by Arne Skaug Olsen
“The project places emphasis on the creative process and aims to foster new ideas, different forms of knowledge production and the development of new working methods. At the same time we would like to shift the traditional focus in residency programmes from individual practitioners to collaborative practice. As the project is focused on the research phase, the goal is to encourage new relationships, the testing of new ideas and the taking of creative risks.”

Collaborative Research Residency (hereafter called CRR) has been a two year joint venture between Baltic Art Center – BAC in Visby, The Factory for Art & Design – FFKD in Copenhagen and Hordaland Art Centre. These three institutions initiated the project in 2010, on a trial basis, with financial support of the Nordic Council of Ministers. This transnational project was inspired by a desire to create a new residency platform, giving the participants more freedom than what is commonly the case in most residencies, including the ones currently operated by the three institutions themselves.
Common to most current arrangements is the insistence on productivity. This may be an expectation that the participants will provide some kind of “payback”, either in the shape of some definite production in connection with the work or mandate of the host institution, or its role in a national or regional context. The visitors, be they artists, curators or writers, are usually invited on the basis of a proposed project, to be started or completed during the visit. By focussing on the period of creative work ahead of any project formulation, CRR has actively tried to break with instrumental thinking as far as the production of meaning in the art scene is concerned. This freedom has been linked to the concept of “creative risk”, which should be the fulcrum for participants in CRR, rather than production. Putting freedom in the driving seat also increases the risk that knowledge produced through this research will not be applied. The other element counteracting instrumentality is the highlighting of cooperation and a collective situation with actors representing different specialties; the only criterion for the group is that at least one member must belong to the art scene.
This text is an assessment of CRR commissioned by the institutions behind CRR. The evaluation was made on the basis of public presentations online, the open call, the application materials, internal documents and the criteria provided by the sponsoring partner, the Nordic Council of Ministers. The method employed was to subject these linguistic elements to semantic and rhetorical speculations in the light of concepts derived from economics and philosophy. Thus the evaluation does not try to review what CRR is, but rather to create a discursive platform which pushes to extremes some of the challenges presented to participants and institutions by contemporary transnational (art) economics and politics.Master night: Tor Steffen Espedal - Artist and maniera. The new bookshop at Hordaland Art Centre, which opens November 2011, carries a broad range of magazines and books dealing with contemporary art and culture. You can find a wide variety of anthologies and text collections discussing important aspects of art production, art institutions and curatorial practice. Resident at Hordaland Art Centre, Vilnius based curator and writer Valentinas Klimašauskas, was very pleased to find the archives of documentation of Norwegian public art projects (1977-2001) in his Bergen studio. Having no prior knowledge of the Norwegian (public) art scene he consciously has chosen to use this chance of incompetence as an opportunity to test his own knowledge and imagination by preparing a selection of documentation and comments for the slide night as a way to present his practices. The presentation is accompanied by home made soup to everyone attending.

Textile and photography: the two media seem, at first, to be antithetical. On the one hand we have a painstakingly slow craft, and on the other an immediate and automatic process. One is constructive, the other indexical. Weaving is rooted in the past, photography the ultimate medium of modernity.

35 years ago in 2011 the first Art Centre was established in Norway. Hordaland Art Centre has through its history, firstly at the two galleries Galleri 1 and Galleri NK then on its premises at Klosteret, showed artists’ new works. Often these artists have had their first solo exhibition with us. We wish to mark the anniversary together with artists and everyone else interested, and will focus on the art that has been on display.
Walking tour: Elsebeth Jørgensen/Bjørn Arvid Bagge - Walk Along Various Paths
Walk Along Various Paths is a performative element of the exhibition Ways of Losing Oneself in an Image by Elsebeth Jørgensen. This atypical walking tour manifests itself as an hours walk between the Hordaland Art Centre and The Picture Collection of the University of Bergen; the two locations of the exhibition consisting of installations of video-, sound- and photo montages. Academic librarian and historian Bjørn Arvid Bagge takes us on a walking tour where he tells a montage like manuscript with three narrative tracks.

2011 marks the 35th year of the Hordaland Art Centre, and we are creating a programme exploring ideas of histories and futures based on different thematics and institutional frameworks. Master night: Espen Johansen - The art of Terence Koh: "artist's artist or the most popular artist?"
At the semester's last Master Night, Espen Johansen will talk about his brand new master thesis The art of Terence Koh - "artist's artist, or the most popular artist?". In remarkably short time, Terence Koh has become an internationally recognized artist, partly because of his use of unconventional materials such as chocolate, and his experience-based works that exposes the viewer to overwhelming sensory stimuli from the strong (pulsing) lights, or the intense smell of perfume and incense.

For one of our exhibitions to mark the 35th year of Hordaland Art Centre, we have invited curator Sarah Rifky to reflect on issues of the history and future. Her response is the exhibition titled The Bergen Accords, a three part project which will manifest as a living sculpture on Torgallmenningen May 1st by the artist duo Anetta Mona Chişa and Lucia Tkáčová titled If not Us, Who? Len LIVE! is an evening screening of three of Len Lye's films: All Soul's Carnival (1957), Kaleidoscope (1935) and Tusalava (1929), created as a companion to the ongoing exhibition at Hordaland Art Centre. We have invited the three sound artists Espen Sommer Eide, Lasse Marhaug and Maia Urstad to create new scores for Tusalava. Sommer Eide and Urstad will perform live.

PolArt is a project where artists are invited to join a scientific research expedition in Arctic Ocean, and is a collaboration between theresearchnetwork Arctos, Tromsø kunstforening and the artist residency at Troms fylkeskommune.

Kunstjournalen B-post is an contemporary art magazine published annually, which contains contributions from contemporary artists. Each issue investigates a central topic through commissioned texts and art projects. On February 8th the fifth edition of Kunstjournalen B-post will be launched at Hordaland Art Centre. The launch starts at 8 PM, and everyone who shows up before 8.30 will receive a complimentary magazine. Len Lye
Len Lye (1901-1980) is to the general audience a rather unknown artist from the previous century. Despite this his works are well known among artists, as well as filmmakers. His kinetic sculptures are made of steel, wood and fibreglass, often dramatically staged with lights, and his films were groundbreaking.
Force Field and Sonic Wave by Guy Brett
To accompany the exhibition Len Lye we re-publish Guy Brett's text Force Field and Sonic Wave. This text first appeared in the book Len Lye, edited by Tyler Cann and Wystan Curnow, published by the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Len Lye Foundation on the occasion of the 2009 retrospective exhibition of Lye’s work at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne.

aiPotu - Leila
aiPotu's exhibition Leila can be seen in relation to their ongoing project The Island Tour - a series of island expeditions which since 2007 has led them to Iceland, Australia and the British Isles. Based on The Island Tour the two artists were challenged to seek out the island Leila in the Strait of Gibraltar in March 2009. The journey was made, but the destination never reached.

Master Night: Tor Martin Leknes
On Master Night, Tor Martin Leknes will talk about Ralph L. Wilson (1872 – 1951) from Fana outside of Bergen. Wilson came back home after his years abroad for education and work, with his first camera in the late 19th century. Thus joining an increasing trend; the camera was getting cheaper and more available than before, which in turn created the milieu of amateur photographers in Norway that Wilson himself was a part of.Lecture: Charlotte Bik Bandlien

Participating artists are Oliver Bulas, Nick Evans, Julia Horstmann, Alon Levin, Cato Løland, Ingrid Lønningdal, Ciara Phillips et al., and is curated in collaboration with Annette Hans (Hamburg Kunstverein) and Jamie Kenyon (Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) in Glasgow). The exhibition is created on site in Hamburg Kunstverein during a residency for the artists, and the audience is invited to an exhibition in constant change and an evening programme put together by the artists and curators.

Between September 3rd and October 3rd the two artists Lutz-Rainer Müller and Stian Ådlandsvik transform the house on Holmedalshammaren 67 at the island of Askøy outside of Bergen to a sculpture. This is one part of the two part exhibition titled You only tell me you love me when you're drunk. The other part can be seen at Hordaland Art Centre at Nordnes in Bergen. On the opening night there will be a free shuttle bus beween Hordaland Art Centre and Holmedalshammaren 67.

In his MA-thesis, titeled Sankt Felix Kunstnerens død og oppstandelse i postmodernistisk kunstteori med utgangspunkt i Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ ”Untitled” (Lover Boys) (in Norwegian), Mathias Danbolt is investigating the relationship between artist, artwork and audience in contemporary art. While emphasizing sexuality, sex and politics in postmodern art theory, he is studying the literature on Cuban-Mexican artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996), finding that the artist is written about in two distinct, and almost opposite ways.Juan A. The ultimate consequence of conceptually based art is a total absence of objects. With this exhibition we will take a closer look at the status of the art object and its’ value by mapping the process of production and the materiality of the one object on display in the exhibiton - a stone produced in a laboratory.

Resident: Felice Hapetzeder
Hordaland Art Centre (HKS) hosts three guests from the Nordic countries in 2009, and the first is Felice Hapetzeder from Sweden. Felice works with video, using documentary strategies to discuss issues relating to identity. Tuesday March 10th at 7 P.M. we will host the first guest artist talk where Felice will present his artistic practice and talk about his collaborative projects ak28 and solo-show. The videos Onkel Kurti and Capital of the world will be screened. The floor will be opened for discussion.

The MA-weekend we present this spring is the exhibition An Elaborated System of Human Longing by Chloe Lewis and Andrew Taggart. This ongoing project is, so far, a series of objects and two videos.

This year's B-open seminar is called Hot House - Art and Human Ecologycurated and moderated by Samir M'kadmi at landmark, with Tine Mareen Buddeberg, Karen O'Brien, Susanne Jaschko, Samir M'kadmi, Peter Fend, Heather Ackroyd.
Øystein Dahlstrøm & Unn Fahlstrøm
By re-using materials they create their worlds. Dahlstrøm through image manipulation and Fahlstrøm through looking at sections of the already unreal world of film. Rythm and space absorbs both artists, but in different ways. Dahlstrøm creates the spaces in his meticulous photographs through manipulation, while Fahlstrøm uses time, space and sound to create her video works.
B-open 2008
Hordaland Art Centre collaborates with BKFH and NKVN on the annual event B-open. This year there are open studios, a seminar, exhibition openings, magazine and book launches and a bit more.

Le Monde Autour de Vous -1st Brussels Biennial
Hordaland Art Centre (HKS) contributes to the project Le Monde Autours de Vous by Abdellah Karroum/L'appartement 22. The project is also part of the first Brussels Biennale, artistic director Barbara Vanderlinden.
Le Monde Autours de Vous was co-curated by L’appartement 22, Hordaland kunstsenter and Stacion Center for Contemporay Art Prishtina, with participating artists Hamdi Attia, Elodie Carré, Ninar Esber, Seamus Farrell, HC Gilje, Pedro Gómez-Egaña, Flaka Haliti, Agon Hamza, Fatmir Mustafa, Pascal Sémur, Batoul S’Himi.
