FORUM MASTER NIGHT: NORA SØRENSEN VAAGE - BIO ART AS A QUESTIONING OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY: EDUARDO KAC'S TRANSGENETIC ART

Nora Sørensen Vaage will present her current resarch on the American artist Eduardo Kac (1962 - ), who is renowned and criticized worldwide for provocative use of biotechnology and gene manipulation in his art works.

Most attention has been given to Kac’s work GFP Bunny (Alba), where the artist implanted a gene from a jellyfish into a rabbit, making it fluoresces green under special lightning conditions. Kac’s uses his works to debate the methods of genetics and biotechnology, and in this presentation Vaage will question the moral aspects by Kac’s own way of working.

Nora Sørensen Vaage holds a BA in aesthetics from the University of Bergen, and she is currently in her fourth semester as an MA student at the same institution. Besides art history, she has studied cultural journalism, theatre studies, literature studies and American culture, and been a volunteer for the stydy committee of art history, the Bergen Biennial Conference and Bergen International Festival.

Master Night is a series of lectures where both MA students and recently graduated art historians present their MA dissertations to a public. With Master Night Hordaland Art Centre wishes to bridge the gap between the academic and practicing art scenes in Bergen, and create a place for interaction between students and professionals.

Eva Rem Hansen is responsible for this programme and Master Night is made possible due to good help from the study committee of Art History at the University of Bergen.
