Each month our residency guests will present their own work, a chosen theme, a current interest or present their residency project. Our December resident guest is artist LeRoy Stevens. Tuesday December 7thyou are welcome to his artist talk and the launch of his new artist book Quadrangle.
"Defined as someone who, repairs, adjusts, or works with something in an unskilled or experimental manner, the tinkerer is always at work. The tinkerer never wastes time. Aware of the past and his relationship to the present, the tinkerer is always at play. The tinkerer stays awake at night with excitement. The tinkerer is irrational. I have seen with my own eyes a tinkerer collecting bottles and within one week's time, riding a raft of plastic bottles along the East River. The tinkerer is aggressive. Actively pursuing opportunity."
Stevens describes his work as activity based, typically the culmination of an activity that combines elements of process, performance, and sculpture. His projects involve extensive research that includes drawing, letter writing, and participation with others. Stevens is currently producing a body of work that is influenced by swimming starting blocks, art and architecture, as well as pervasive objects like trash containers and park benches. This recent sculptural work investigates material, structural, and decorative variations within the built environment while systematically following FINA regulations for starting block design. After the talk Stevens will be presenting Quadrangle, a new artist book that consists of aerial images of American University Quads.
Stevens obtained a BFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2007. In 2009 he started the publishing company Small World, which focuses on projects that relate to geography and networks. His work has been written about in the New York Times, The Daily Telegraph UK, and he has appeared on numerous radio shows including, "World Service," BBC, "All Things Considered," NPR, "As it Happens," CBC, and "Something Else," WLUW.
